Utica YouthBuild Program

Helps individuals ages 18-24 to enroll in GED prep classes and to gain construction experience building housing for low-income families.  This program will also help the individuals to enter the workforce, post-secondary schooling or the military at the close of the program.

Qualifications

  • Ages 18-24
  • Low-income (WIA Standards) – 100% poverty
  • School Dropout / Basic Skills Deficient
  • YouthBuild standards (must meet one)
    • Youth in Foster Care
    • Individual with a disability
    • Youth Offender
    • Migrant Youth
    • Child of an Incarcerated Parent

Basic Information

  • Helps low-income, at-risk youth to find and retain employment
  • 5 month program / 20 hours per week (Monday – Friday)
  • GED Prep
  • Construction Skills

End of Program Goals

  • Post-secondary schooling      2. Employment             3. Military

Program Information

  • Students looking to obtain their GED / learn construction skills
  • 10 hours / week GED Prep classes @ BOCES Utica Access Site
  • 8 hours / week Construction skills @ Johnson Park Center
  • 2 hours / week Leadership training(learn occupational opportunities)
  • $4 per hour for GED prep classes and leadership training
  • $7.25 per hour for Construction skills training
  • 5 month program (4 cycles) September 2009 – June 2011
