Description: The primary task of the Direct Support Professional is to provide assistance and training to individuals with disabilities to achieve enhanced community inclusion.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Assist in and teach activities including but not limited to: cooking, cleaning, shopping, money management, personal care/hygiene, transferring and providing transportation;
  • Provide support in daily and social activities;
  • Implement the goals outlined in the service plan;
  • Provide own transportation to and from consumers’ home.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all work-related information
  • Complete DSP Basic Training upon being hired and annually as needed.

Successful candidates will have experience working with individuals with disabilities.  A valid Driver’s License is required.  A High School Diploma or equivalent is preferred.

Disability Voter Registration Week Events

National Disability Voter Registration week officially kicks off on Monday, July 15th and goes on until Friday, July 19th. In honor of this, The Resource Center for Independent Living, Inc. (RCIL) is partnering with Disability Rights New York (DRNY) to offer free events to the community promoting voter education and registration.

Arc Herkimer is looking for energetic and motivated staff to work with individuals with disabilities and help them achieve their goals!  Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) promote positive self-esteem of individuals in a home setting, classroom setting or in the community through consistent positive interactions, support, encouragement, and unconditional respect of individuals’ rights. They have part-time, full-time and relief positions available.

Activities/duties include:

  • Help individuals in the community increase independence and integration.
  • Offer individuals a safe and loving home atmosphere within the community.
  • Assist individuals in a classroom setting to achieve goals through community activities as well as site based settings.
  • Develop and maintain positive, open communication with individuals’ family members, and project a caring, professional image which fosters confidence in staff’s ability to provide care.
  • Direct care duties as necessary, including assisting individuals with toileting, medication needs, illness issues, fire evacuations, or other emergent situations.
  • Assist with the daily routine of the house or classroom, which may include meal preparation, lifting and transferring.

Position requirements:

  • High school diploma/GED.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Positions in the community and classroom require a vehicle.
  • Associate’s and Bachelor’s degrees in a related field such as psychology, sociology, etc. are compensated at a higher rate.
  • No previous experience is required – we provide paid training!

DSPs must complete all program requirements within designated time frames, such as in-service trainings. Positions are located in Dolgeville, Little Falls, Herkimer, Mohawk, Ilion, and Frankfort.
