Unemployment Rates (not seasonally adjusted) for Utica-Rome MSA (Oneida and Herkimer Counties)

March  2013: 9.0%

February 2013: 9.8%

March 2012: 9.3%

The unemployment rate in the Utica-Rome MSA decreased from 9.3 percent in March 2012 to 9.0 percent in March 2013. This marks the first over-the-year decline in the jobless rate since August 2007.  (The current unemployment rate series began in 1990.)

The jobless rate declined from February 2013, as expected.  From February to March, in the past 10 years, the unemployment rate declined 9 times and remained unchanged once.

The unemployment rate is expected to decline from March to April, as inclement weather begins to subside.  From March to April, in the past 10 years, the unemployment rate always declined.

Training Grant for Employers in Herkimer, Madison, Oneida, Otsego, Chenango & Delaware Counties

The Workforce Investment Board is pursuing a training grant for employers in Herkimer, Madison, Oneida, Otsego, Chenango & Delaware counties who need OSHA and other safety training for new or current employees.

OSHA offers a wide selection of training courses and educational programs to help broaden worker and employer knowledge on the recognition, avoidance, and prevention of safety and health hazards in their workplaces. OSHA also offers training and educational materials that help businesses train their workers and comply with the Occupational Safety and Health Act.

Any safety training is eligible for this application, not just OSHA.

Any employers interested in receiving/developing/participating in specific safety training should send an email to asavino@working-solutions.org.  We will contact each employer to understand their specific need, number to be trained and the process.  If appropriate that training will become part of the application and IF we are successful in the application award will proceed to provide the requested training.

Employer participation in this step is critical to getting the funding so please let us know what is needed in your business facility!

Workforce Investment Board Receives State Funding to Help Low Income Residents Get Jobs

The Workforce Investment Board has received expanded state grant funding to help train and find jobs for low-income individuals across Oneida, Herkimer and Madison Counties, Alice J. Savino, Executive Director of the Workforce Investment Board of Herkimer, Madison and Oneida Counties said today.

The funding is through grants awarded by the state Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) working in collaboration with the state Department of Labor (DOL) to support a Career Pathways Program across the three-county region, which is served by the Working Solutions Career Center System. New York Leaders Program

As part of Governor Cuomo’s New New York Leaders program that was launched a few months ago, the administration has taken all student internship opportunities at all state agencies and centralized them at one domain, http://NYSInternships.com .

This website even hosts links to opportunities at the Senate, Assembly, AG and Comptroller’s Office in an effort to truly make it a one-stop shop for any student interested in an internship with any New York State government entity.  Students can visit the site and apply directly to over 400 internships at state agencies or link to opportunities in other entities or branches of state government.  We want to make sure the word gets out so we can attract a diverse group of the brightest and best young minds in New York.

UC Joins CNYRC, Genesis Group for Jobapalooza – More than 100 employers expected

Joint Career Fair Sponsored by KISSFM, Bug Country, WUTQ

The Central New York Recruiting Consortium (CNYRC) has teamed with the Genesis Group to sponsor the Jobapalooza Career Fair on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at Mohawk Valley Community College’s Robert R. Jorgensen Athletic Center.

Jobapalooza, the first partnership of its kind, will take place from noon to 3 p.m. It is free and open to all area college students and the public.

At the fair, students, alumni and community members can connect with employers with the hopes of garnering a position at one of the many companies that will be represented.

Approximately 100 businesses are expected to recruit new employees at the fair. Some of the businesses include Chobani, Oneida Nation Enterprises/Turning Stone Resort Casino, General Electric Energy, Special Metals, PAR Technology, Bassett Medical Center, Utica National Insurance Group, Defense Finance and Accounting Services and many more.

Media sponsors KISSFM, Bug Country and WUTQ will also be present at the event.
