The Central New York Labor Council has teamed up with the New York State Department of Labor to help the community connect, expand access to pre-apprenticeship programs, and assist current union employers to build a workforce of the future.

Workforce Development Board staff will be on hand to talk with job seekers about how our apprenticeship programs can help you get started in a satisfying and good paying career!

All job seekers and businesses currently represented by local union affiliates in Oneida and Herkimer Counties are invited to participate!

The New York State Department of Labor Department of Employment Workforce Solutions is hiring an Employment Counselor! The incumbent will provide complete employment counseling services to applicants in need of special assistance in determining and realizing their occupational potentials. Specific duties and requirements are included below:

The Employment Counselor will:

Provide vocational counseling and career development information to individuals looking for employment. Use interview techniques and testing devices to assess the individual's vocational needs and capabilities as well as help them understand and resolve their problems to obtaining employment. Assist in developing an employment plan, maintain a record of interviews and provide follow-up assistance as necessary.

Required Qualifications:

• You must have a Master's or higher in career development, counseling, education, psychology, or social work.
• One year of full-time employment counseling experience.
• Establishment of a one-to-one employment counseling relationship, including gathering customer information and relating it to the labor market.
• The selection and utilization of career assessments or standardized testing instruments.
• The development and implementation of employment plans.
• Experience performing recruitment; academic advisement; interviewing customers for unemployment, health insurance, or public assistance benefits are NOT considered qualifying.
• The appointed candidate would have to take, pass and be reachable on the next holding of the examination to be appointed permanently.
