NOW OPEN STATEWIDE: NYS COURT OFFICER-TRAINEE (JG-16) EXAM REGISTRATION

Registration is now open for the NYS Court Officer-Trainee (JG-16) open-competitive civil service examination. This is a rare opportunity to launch a career in law enforcement and public safety with one of the largest court systems in the world.

🗓 Filing Period: April 1, 2026 (10:00 A.M.) – May 14, 2026

📅 Exam Period: August 26, 2026 – October 7, 2026

*A $30 filing fee applies. NYS Unified Court System employees are exempt from the filing fee.*

What NYS Court Officers Do:

  • Protect and Serve: Maintain order and provide security in courtrooms, court buildings, and grounds across New York State, ensuring justice can be delivered safely every day.
  • Peace Officer Authority: Court Officer-Trainees are peace officers who, upon completion of Academy training, may be authorized to carry firearms, execute warrants, and make arrests.
  • Academy Training: Successful candidates complete four months of paid basic training at the NYS Court Officers Academy, followed by on-the-job training in court operations and security.
  • Career with a Mission: Work alongside judges, attorneys, and court staff in a dynamic environment with direct impact on the people of New York State.

Career Progression: Advance from NYS Court Officer-Trainee (JG-16) to NYS Court Officer (JG-19) upon successful completion of the two-year traineeship. 

Compensation:

Base Salary at Hire: $58,100.00

Location Pay (additional):

  • $4,920 – NYC, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester & Rockland
  • $2,460 – Orange, Dutchess & Putnam

Benefits:

  • NYS Pension (Employees' Retirement System) & Deferred Compensation Option
  • Uniform & Equipment Allowance: $1,660 annually
  • Security and Law Enforcement Differential (SLED): $875 annually
  • Paid Parental Leave
  • Twenty (20) Paid Vacation Days
      • Twenty-seven (27) Paid Vacation Days by the Seventh Year
  • Thirteen (13) Paid Holidays
  • Veteran Credits Available (5 pts non-disabled / 10 pts disabled)

Minimum Qualifications for Appointment:

  • Be at least 20.5 years of age
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Be a United States citizen
  • Be a resident of New York State
  • Possess a valid New York State Driver's License
  • Be legally eligible to carry firearms

Note: Physical, medical, and psychological examinations, including a fitness test and substance abuse screening, will be conducted prior to appointment.
